Who should get checked

Silent eye conditions need a check-up, not symptoms

Diabetic eye disease and glaucoma are often painless in the early stages and can be present while your vision still seems fine. A dilated examination is how they are found early.

  • You have diabetesAt least one full eye examination a year, or more often if your doctor advises.
  • You are over 40The risk of glaucoma and other eye disease rises with age.
  • Glaucoma runs in your familyA parent, brother or sister with glaucoma raises your own risk.
  • You have high blood pressureIt can affect the blood vessels of the retina.
  • You are very short-sighted, or use steroidsBoth can increase the risk of glaucoma.
  • You haven’t had your eyes checked in over a yearRegular checks catch changes before you notice them.

Two conditions we look for

Diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma

Retina

Diabetic retinopathy

High blood sugar over time can damage the tiny blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensing layer at the back of the eye. Early stages usually cause no symptoms; later you may notice blurred vision, floaters or dark patches. Good sugar and blood-pressure control, together with regular eye checks, lowers the risk of it getting worse.

Optic nerve

Glaucoma

Glaucoma damages the optic nerve, often linked to raised pressure inside the eye. It is usually painless, and side vision is lost first, so it can go unnoticed. Treatment can slow or stop further loss, but sight that is already lost cannot be restored — which is why early detection matters.

What to expect

Your check-up, step by step

  1. History and vision

A short talk about your health, diabetes and medicines, family history and any symptoms, followed by a vision test.

  2. Eye pressure

A quick, painless measurement of the pressure inside your eyes, one of the key checks for glaucoma.

  3. Dilated examination

Drops widen your pupils so Dr. Gupta can examine the retina and optic nerve closely. They sting briefly and blur near vision for a few hours.

  4. Further tests and your plan

If needed, more tests such as visual-field testing or scans. You then get a clear explanation, and if treatment or a specialist referral is needed, you are told exactly what and why.

Please bring: your current glasses, a list of your medicines, recent sugar reports (such as HbA1c) and any earlier eye reports. Because of the dilating drops, bring sunglasses and, if you can, someone to accompany you — avoid driving straight afterwards.
Don’t wait for a routine appointment if you have sudden loss or blurring of vision, a shower of new floaters or flashes of light, a dark curtain over part of your sight, or severe eye pain with redness, halos around lights or nausea. Go to an eye casualty the same day.

Questions

Diabetic eye & glaucoma check-ups: your questions

How often should I have my eyes checked if I have diabetes?

At least once a year, and more often if you are advised to, or if you have had eye changes, pregnancy, or poor sugar control. Don’t wait for symptoms.

My vision is fine. Do I still need a check-up?

Yes. Early diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma usually cause no symptoms, so good vision doesn’t rule them out.

Do the dilating drops hurt?

They sting for a few seconds. Your near vision and light sensitivity will be affected for a few hours, so plan not to drive straight afterwards.

How long will the visit take?

Allow about an hour or more, mostly for the dilating drops to work. It can be longer if extra tests are needed.

Can glaucoma be cured?

Glaucoma can’t be cured and damage that has already happened can’t be reversed, but treatment, such as eye drops, laser or surgery, can slow or stop it getting worse. Regular follow-up is essential.

What treatment is available if something is found?

That depends on what the examination shows: from monitoring and better control of sugar and blood pressure, to eye drops, laser or surgery. Where a specialist procedure is needed, Dr. Gupta will explain it and guide you to the right care.

Will my insurance cover the check-up?

Cover for outpatient check-ups differs between policies. Please check with your insurer or ask us when you book.

Protect your sight with a yearly check

It takes about an hour, and it can find changes long before they affect how you see.
